Arabica coffee was first planted in Aceh in 1924 and is being developed into the “product for the future” for the community. The Gayo Highlands lie between 900 meters and 2,600 meters above sea level, offering ideal conditions for arabica coffee production. The coffee here grows in volcanic topsoil at a depth of approximately 65 centimeters. This distinctive and fertile type of highland soil allows the Gayo community to produce the finest traditional Arabica coffees in North Sumatra. The spirit of the Gayo community and its drive to preserve one of the island’s oldest trades mean Gayo coffee is now truly among the world-class coffees.
