La Leona is the name of the washing mill in the community of San Marcos. The area is surrounded by two of the highest peaks in Guatemala, the Tajumulco and Tamaca volcanoes. The cherries planted in this area sit at 1,200 - 1,800m above sea level in rich and fertile soil.

The coffee plants are grown in the shade of other crops such as plantain and oranges. All coffee from La Leona is fully washed and fermented with water for 30-40 hours. The cherries are then sun-dried on patios and raised beds for the next 10-18 days until the moisture content is between 10-12%.

The La Leona washing mill serves around 20 smallholder producers who have worked hard over the years to strengthen their infrastructure and the quality of coffee they produce.
